Acropora Coral

In the Cnidaria phylum, acropora coral may have various appearances based on its location and the actual species. One of the visual differences of acropora coral is that it might have long branches or broad branches.

Acropora Coral Differences

The acropora coral may also have plates on it. These differences in acropora coral are related to the location in the world as well as the actual species of the acropora coral. Polyps make up acropora coral, which is similar to many other types of corals. The acropora coral polyps are actually individual. Usually, the acropora coral is small and it measures a millimeter or two in diameter. The polyps share tissue in addition to a nerve net.

Acropora Coral Feeding

Many times the polyps protrude from the coral, especially at night when they are feeding on zooplankton. However, when there are predators nearby it is not uncommon for the acropora coral to retract into the coral.

Acropora Coral Surroundings

Acropora coral is found in ocean environments that have really high water movement. Acropora coral also needs very strong and bright light. In most cases acropora coral is found in reef waters that have shallow water. Typically, the acropora coral reef colonies will also be home to small fish, too.

Threats To Acropora Coral

Zooxanthellae and acropora coral have a symbiotic relationship. That means the coral supports the zooxanthellae while the zooxanthellae provides nutrients and nourishment to the acropora coral thanks to photosynthesis. Acropora coral populations are not as prolific as they once were because of environmental factors. Pollution is a problem for acropora coral as well as other types of coral and will continue to be a problem. This could affect future acropora populations. Generally, when the acropora coral is stressed it will begin to bleach. Bleaching means that the zooxanthellae within the coral are dying and without it the coral will die too. Sedimentation, water that is too hot, and pollution are the cause of acropora coral bleaching.
