Acropora Sp

Acropora SP is staghorn corals. One of the reefs most important corals, these acropora SP hard corals continue coral reef growth by growing on the previous colonies skeleton. Reefs are made of limestone that is created through calcium that coral polyps extract from seawater.

Branches Of The Acropora Sp

The coral branches to increase the acropora SPs surface area as a result of the sunlight they are exposed to. This sunlight allows for the acropora SP to provide energy to the organisms, which is required to grow properly. It is most common to find Acropora SP staghorn corals in waters that are quite shallow. The coral has cylindrical branches that branch out to reach up to two meters in length.

Acropora Sp Reproduction

Acropora SP reproduces typically through asexual fragmentation. Sexual reproduction does occur with acropora SP and involved gametes being released into the water. Acropora SP begins its sexual reproduction and the release of gametes yearly, generally in the month of August or September. Millions of gametes are released from acropora SP colonies because the colonies are considered simultaneous hermaphrodites, which means they are both female and male simultaneously. New acropora SP colonies begin when a branch from an original colony breaks off and then reattaches itself to substrate.

Acropora Sp Planula

Planula, which is the coral larvae, lives for a few days floating in the plankton until they find a place to settle and begin a new acropora SP colony. However, the conversion of gametes to larvae and larvae to a new colony is very low. This particular species of acropora SP and its reliance on asexual reproduction means that in the leftover populations the genetic diversity is incredibly low.

Acropora Sp Growth

Acropora SP growth is the western Atlantics fastest growing coral. Every year the branches of the acropora SP coral can grow four to eight inches. Acropora SP coral is also one of the most important corals in the Caribbean for fish habitats as well as reef growth.

Acropora Sp Habitat

The habitat of the acropora SP may be found at depths as deep as 30 meters, or 98 feet on the fore reef or back reef. The upper portions of the Acropora SP growth is affected by the force of the waves while the lower portions of the acropora SP reef are affected by suspended sediment and the availability of light.
