Purple Acropora

Purple acropora, frequently referred to as pink acropora or acropora humilis, is a species of coral found almost exclusively along the Great Barrier Reef in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.

Purple Acropora Location on the Reef

The purple acropora's dwelling of choice is along upper reef ledges and flats, preferring this area because of its central location to fast moving currents while also being shallow enough to access steady amounts of natural sunlight. These two characteristics about the purple acropora's natural dwelling are extremely critical to maintaining healthy specimens in captivity. Mimicking the purple acropora's preferred habitat through strong power heads and lighting sources will help further the health of a specimen in an artificial environment.

General Appearance of Purple Acropora

Like its name suggests, the purple acropora species is found in various shades of purple, a relatively uncommon coloring that is visually pleasing to both divers and reef enthusiasts. The purple acropora usually grows in the shape of a dome, its branches clustering in the general shape of a circle around its body. It is not uncommon for the branches of the purple acropora to have brightly colored contrasting tips of green, orange or blue.

Challenges to Keeping Purple Acropora in a Reef Aquarium

Many aquarists are fascinated by the species of purple acropora corals, but should only be attempted by intermediate or advanced hobbyists. Because of the purple acropora's shape, shipping the specimen without causing damage to its branches is difficult. Adding a new specimen to a home tank is difficult enough when the specimen is in optimal condition- starting out with a purple acropora that is damaged is going to make the transition that much more difficult.

Purple Acropora and Ideal Reef Aquarium Conditions

Once the transport of a purple acropora has been successful, a whole new set of challenges begins. After the specimen has been properly acclimated to the new surroundings, decide on the desired permanent placement for the purple acropora coral. After final placement, avoid moving the purple acropora- doing so can unnecessarily damage the specimen.

Purple Acropora and Lighting

Lighting sources for the purple acropora should be set on the highest levels available- this setting will bring out the intense shades of red and purple in the purple acropora's tips, causing them to fluoresce brilliantly. Water conditions should be kept anywhere between 74F and 83F, as long as the final temperature remains steady for the purple acropora. Water movement needs to be fast-moving- power heads can effectively wash off excess sediment from the body of the purple acropora. These general parameters will help ensure that the purple acropora specimen thrives in captivity.Purple acropora, frequently referred to as pink acropora or acropora humilis, is a species of coral found almost exclusively along the Great Barrier Reef in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
