Green Blastomussa
Like its relative red blastomussa, the green blastomussa is a rare hard coral found in the Indonesian and Pacific Ocean waters, especially the low laying reefs in Bali, Tonga and Jakarta. Do not be mislead if you see a coral that appears to be a green blastomussa but is labeled as a Green Pipe Coral- the two are used interchangeably in some journals and classifications.
Green Blastomussa Origins
The green portion of the green blastomussa title comes from its neon green center that lightens to a rust or brown on the perimeter, although some types of green blastomussas even have red or brown colorings mixed into its body. Green blastomussa can be found in both the blastomussa wellsi and blastomussa Green Blastomussa Insanemerletti versions of blastomussa hard corals.
Green Blastomussa Structure
Dense and compact when opened, the green blastomussa looks like one large mass, and their rounded appearance looks incredibly similar to a brain coral. Although one would not be able to tell at first glance, there is calcium based skeletal mass underneath its blooms, from which the green blastomussas polyps actually emerge via stony tubes that are attached. These are not often seen, since the polyps take center stage when the green blastomussa is opened. All blastomussa corals, including green blastomussa, have nocturnal polyps.
Green Blastomussa In A Tank Environment
Because of its colorful coat and difficulty to harvest, the green blastomussa are a cult favorite among reef enthusiasts and hobbyists. If choosing between a green blastomussa wellsi and green blastomussa merletti, the beginner aquarists will have higher rates of success with the green blastomussa merletti. Within an artificial tank, the green blastomussa will spread quickly and expand over many surfaces in groups of smaller formed colonies. Like any coral, the green blastomussa will require optimal tank environment in order to thrive, including tailored lighting, sufficient water movement, food quantities and Green Blastomussa Colony qualities, and the addition of trace minerals. The green blastomussa should be purchased already attached to a piece of live rock, but if not, use a coral-safe glue to secure the coral to a similar substrate within the existing tank. Depending on the tanks lighting conditions, the green blastomussa could be placed in the sandy bottom of the aquarium.
Green Blastomussa Polyps
If the green blastomussa polyps are not expanding fully in a home tank, the culprit could be that the coral is placed too close to a light source. For this reason, place the green blastomussa out of direct light. Green blastomussa prefer a diet rich in marine snow, phytoplankton and other organisms for its filter feeding methods.
Green Blastomussa & Other Inhabitants
The green blastomussa is very peaceful in nature, and does not have a history of encroaching on neighboring coral or other creatures that reside within close distances. However, it should be kept away from stinging corals that could potentially damage the green blastomussa with their far reaching tentacles.
