Live Brain Coral

Many have taken to calling brain coral live brain coral because many assume that coral is not a living thing or that it is simply a plant. The fact is that live brain coral is as much an animal as any other animal that you would find in the sea.

Live Brain Coral Requirements

Live brain coral requires light, water, and food to continue to live and it changes and grows, making it an animal by all accounts. Live brain coral is quite unique and is actually something that many divers and researchers seek out when in coral reefs or inter-reef areas.

Live Brain Coral Species

There are many different types of live brain coral. Many people like the closed or typical live brain coral. The species got its name because it truly looks like a human brain because the live brain coral has many ridges and channels on its surface that look like the folds in a human brain. Live brain coral ranges in color from brown, to green, to red, blue, and even yellow. Live brain coral really is quite interesting.

Live Brain Coral Nutrients

Most live brain coral does not require much in the way of food and often survives on the algae that grows in its folds and shrimp or brine that pass by its tentacles. All live brain coral feed during different times of the day or night depending on the species. Some live brain coral feed during the night time hours while other live brain coral protect themselves with their tentacles at night and feed during the day.

Live Brain Coral Competition On The Reef

Live brain coral does have some competition in the sea. The problem is that live brain coral grows quite slow, so other types of coral often crowd the live brain coral. Another problem that some species of live brain coral have is that more aggressive fish will actually pick at them and cause damage to the surface of the live brain coral; this is often seen with the open live brain coral. While the live brain coral does have some competition it also has some things going for it including the fact that live brain coral can live as long as 200 years and is quite tough and will weather strong storms that will decimate other types of coral.

Live Brain Coral Distribution

Live brain coral can be found in most of the oceans throughout the world, though it is usually found in warmer waters as live brain coral seems to prefer temperatures that range from about 74 about 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Although there have been some sighting of live brain corals found at temperatures outside of this range. Live brain coral is often kept in large fish tanks by people and has shown to be quite even when it is not in the ocean.
