There is a deep underlying reason why the two 'best' ways of maintaining clacium and alkalinity in reef tanks have such drastically different pH's. Both of these methods (limewater and CaCO3/CO2 reactors) achive balanced inputs of calcium and alkalinity by relying on the natural balance of calcium and alkalinity in calcium carbonate. This weekend I built two canopy hoods. One for a 120 gallon planted tank with 4 X 48' VHO bulbs (440 watt), and one for a planted 45 gallon planted tank with 6 24' standard flouresent bulbs (120 watt). Total time, excluding shopping and varnish/painting, about 4 hours each
