Dottyback is the common name given to the fish that compromise the family Pseudochromidae. Most of the dottyback fish that are popular in marine aquariums are from the Pseudochromis genus. Their extremely bright colors, along with their intriguing personality, have made them a hobby favorite.
Dottybacks are distributed throughout the ocean waters of the Indo-Pacific and Western Atlantic region. Because these beautiful fish could only be found in remote locations, high prices were demanded to bring them to captive aquariums. Successful captive breeding of the dottyback by organizations such as ORA Farms relieved the stress on wild collection practices. Dottybacks are moderate to aggressive fish, and can be territorial towards other fish. They are more aggressive toward similarly shaped fish and same species.
Dottyback are carnivores and will accept most any food that is meat based. Mysis, brine, plankton, small crustaceans and zooplankton are among the favorite foods enjoyed by the dottyback. Home aquariums need to have plenty of hiding places. The make their den in caves and enjoy all kinds of cracks and crevices. Due to their tendency toward aggressive bahavior, they need to only have semi-aggressive tank mates that can stand up to them. Usually introducing several dottyback to the same tank at the same time will alleviate some of the territorial issues.
Little is known about the life expectancy of dottyback in the wild. In captivity, given the right tank conditions, dottyback can live for several years. Despite their smaller size (most are between 2 to 3.5 at maturity), their aggressive nature can shorten their life span if they arent paired with similar fish of the same aggression level.
There are many different types of dottyback fish. Their brilliant colors and scrappy aggression make them an aquarium enthusiast favorite. Common types are the Orchid Dottyback, Magenta Dottyback (also called the Strawberry Dottyback), Splendid Dottyback, Arabian (or Neon) Dottyback, and the rare Springers Dottyback.
Dottyback are very fun reef fish to have in your saltwater aquarium. Despite their tendency toward aggression, if the proper aquarium conditions are met and the proper food is provided, dottyback can provide years of entertainment and fun to your tank. They are relatively easy to care for and add great color and flash to your saltwater reef environment.
