Favia Coral
Favia coral requires special lighting because it is usually found about 25 to 30 feet below the waters surface. Because of this it is accustomed to blue light rather than high intensity of light. Favia coral that has high levels of green pigment will thrive when you use metal halide lighting even if they happen to be close to the waters surface. If you have favia coral that does not have much pigmentation then you will know that they can handle higher levels of lighting.
Favia Coral And Pigmentation
Regardless of the pigmentation you will want to add light slowly to the coral. If you shine bright light on lightly pigmented favia coral and it is not used to it then you could have some problems. Similarly, if you take a highly pigmented favia coral out of the light then there could be other problems.
Favia Coral Feeding
Favia coral filter feeds so it is important to leave the floating food and plankton in the water. Do not remove any of these things mechanically or the favia coral will not be able to feed properly. You will occasionally want to add good food to the mix to ensure that your favia coral receives enough nutrients. Favia coral will feed during the daylight hours however they feed more at night so it is important to feed them when the lights are not on.
Favia Coral In The Aquarium
One method that works well is to use a powdered food at night on a weekly basis so that the favia coral can grow and prosper. It is easy to find these types of foods for favia coral. If the powdered food does not appear to be sufficiently fine then you need to grind it up a bit. Then, add some water to it and stir it up well so there are no clumps. Once the food is dissolved in the water simply add it to the aquarium water slowly and across the top. This will allow the favia coral to get the food it needs.
