Choosing the best types of fish for your saltwater marine reef tank is important for the overall health and well being of your tank. Finding reef safe fish can take some research before your tank is officially occupied with these creatures. Some reef fish can be quite aggressive, and may fight to the death with other fish. Others can be harmful to the others in the tank such as corals and living rocks.
There are some types of reef safe fish that can be great additions to your tank with little or no worry about them. Varies types of Angelfish are very easy to feed and care for, will not attack other fish, and are not damaging to the coral or other invertebrates in the tank. Clownfish, made famous by the movie Finding Nemo, is also a particularly docile reef fish.
Dragonettes and Mandarinfish make great saltwater tank inhabitants if their nutritional needs are properly met. They add incredible color and variety to saltwater tanks. Varies species of Gobies are great reef safe fish and can consume algae and sift other particles to aid in keeping the tank clean. Tangs (Surgeonfish) also offer their vibrant colors to saltwater tanks and are easy to keep in a tank.
There are many different types of reef safe fish in the tropical waters, but there are other creatures not so safe to the reef environment. Creatures such as Jellyfish, some types of octypus, Stingrays, Reef Sharks, and some stinging corals sometimes make the reefs a dangerous place to be.
Keeping your reef safe fish happy in an aquarium environment takes a little research, but can be fairly easy. Reef fishes can be herbivores, planktivorous, and can even be carnivores. It's important to know what type of fish you are going to have in your tank, to make sure that you are providing the best nutrition possible for your reef creatures.
Tropical coral reefs offer an abundance of ecological benefits as well as create wonderful tourist attractions for divers and snorklers. Great efforts are being made to conserve the world's rich coral reefs so that they healthy for many generations to come. Reef safe fish are a very important ecological resource, as well as a great source of enjoyment for tourists as well.
