Paris is the capital and the largest city of France. Founded in the 3rd century by the Celts, it enjoyed continuous development during most of its history. By the 12th century, it was the largest city in Europe and home to one of the continent’s first universities, while also serving as royal residence and capital of the country.
In the 18th century, it was one of the most important centers for science, arts and culture in Europe, and it played a big role in the social and political transformations of the French Revolution. In 1940, it was occupied by the German Army, being liberated in 1944. Today, Paris is one of the most important cultural and economic centers of Europe, home to the largest museums of the world and also the host of numerous international organizations.
